Alan Kleiman — Statement, 2006

My paintings are labor intensive, never laborious. A physical reaction must accompany the visual stimulation of what is in front of me. Transfixed by some phenomenal color, notes are taken. What I see is never just one color. I see a myriad of particles and shadings relating to their surroundings.

I can be enthralled by a color ranging from the sky to the street, flowers, dresses in windows, other peoples' paintings.

Tools are: flayed brushes, painting knives and dental drills. The paintings are composed of up to 50-100 layers of paint, mixed on the canvas- while drawing into the paint, using big and small gestures.

To complete a painting I sometimes work out of doors, my left and right hands simultaneously working as if knitting. threads. The work can take from 2-6 months to complete.
